Sand casting, bronze mask and it´s drywall mold, march 2016 |
..here in the form of a bronze mask. We made sand castings at school and like many of my study-related works, this one was also made based on the Skyrim theme. It´s a replica of the Dragon Priest Mask in Skyrim - didn't make a full copy because of possible copyrights (for the same reason, the products unfortunately are not for sale). But one can see Skyrim. Mask on the right, drywall mold on the left.
In order to cast, a mold had to be made. The sand was patted around the mold, the mold was then removed, and molten bronze poured into the remaining empty space. A nice project which I would definitely be doing more, if I only had a place for it?! With an open fire, the wise say, you can reach a temperature of about 800 degrees of Celsius where melting would be successful.. but yeah, not going in to the woods any time soon making campfires, safety first, right 😏
Anyways, I won't even try to explain the process in detail, but I'll give the stage to University of Memphis, who had a delightfully similar version of our sand castings: "click to see the video here"
And of course a picture of our own castings.
Warmest thanks for your visit
